The aim of the survey was to identify key changes in consumer behavior and attitudes.<\/p>\n<p>The results show that over 60% of those surveyed are still worried about the extraordinary epidemiological situation, with people between 45 and 54 years old in Sofia being the most worried. More than half of those surveyed think that the measures should be stricter given the situation, and 64% believe that they should have been introduced earlier. Most of those surveyed indicated that they agree with the use of personal protective equipment (masks, disinfection, social distancing), working from home, as well as the cancellation of vacations and excursions.<\/p>\n<p>With the upcoming holidays coming up, consumers say they have become more rational and price-sensitive. They admit that this year they will buy cheaper gifts and prepare a more modest holiday treat for their loved ones, because they expect their financial situation to worsen further in the future. Over 60% feel less or no Christmas spirit, and 54% say that the new restrictions have completely changed their plans for spending the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Among the most preferred types of stores for the Christmas meal remain large hypermarket\/supermarket chains, followed by small neighborhood stores and markets. Most often, consumers enter a physical store for essential groceries (91%). The results clearly show that consumers prefer to shop in small neighborhood stores at the expense of large chains. For goods such as appliances (31%), clothes and shoes (30%) and cosmetics (24%), respondents prefer to buy from online stores, although more than half of those surveyed indicated that they think online retailers apply deceptive or misleading strategies before the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>90% of respondents will use their salary or savings to buy Christmas gifts and only 2% will take out a loan for the purpose. Most of the surveyed consumers have allocated a budget between 100 and 250 BGN for Christmas gifts and for no more than four people, and 4% will not buy any gifts. The five most popular gift categories are cosmetics (36%), children&#8217;s toys (34%), clothes and shoes (32%), books (32%) and technology (31%).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the users say they will spend Christmas with their closest family and plan to welcome the New Year at home, while 4% of those surveyed will celebrate the holidays alone. If all restrictions are lifted after December 21, 42% say they will celebrate with friends, 36% would travel or go on vacation, and 26% &#8211; in a restaurant or establishment.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was conducted among 600 men and women aged 18-74, balanced against a nationally representative sample by gender, age, place of residence and size of the settlement. Fieldwork was conducted from December 7-10, with an online user panel JTN Panel, using the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) methodology.
